I asked for a gallon of paint and when I got home I realized the guy had given me this paint/primer and I figured I’d just use it anyway and it's dreadful stuff. Goes on thick and gloopy and drippy. Awful stuff. I'm taking it back tomorrow for a gallon of actual paint and apply it as a top coat.

I think I've always used just the topcoat, not the paint + primer, but it usually goes on unremarkably.

They’re almost all paint/primer nowadays. It’s hard to find one that’s just paint. Consumer Reports gives it a Best Buy, ranking it 7 out of 22 paints.

Behr Ultra is ranked 3rd and just a bit more expensive at $36.

Behr Marquee is ranked 1st and is $45.

I can’t say I have well thought opinions about paint, the act of is terrible but we’ve had acceptable outcomes with that same line of paint.

I’m too cheap to step up to a more costly variation so, that’s where we land.

Good luck with your replacement.

I’ve had good luck with that particular line, but only at temps below about 75F. Any warmer & it behaves poorly. IIRC, all of the Premium Plus line is all-in-one.

Benjamin Moore, across the board, is better paint - their Ben or Regal Select on the cheaper end, Aura if you’ve got a bigger budget & need a single coat to look good. The time saving alone is worth the extra cost, if your technique is good.

Modern latex paint is a hell of a lot better than it was 30 years ago, but I still haven’t found a primer/paint combo that truly works as well as primer followed by top coat.

My buddy is a ticketed painter and hates the stuff. CIL is better, but a trip to Sherman Williams is probably ideal.

P&L Aquanamel FTW. Expensive but actually does what it should.

Agreed. For a task that kinda sucks to do, that you don’t do often, spending $65 on a gallon of Sherman Williams or Benjamin Moore is so worth it.

Kelly Moore. I get the school district's price. I was already at the Despot, so...  Last time I make that mistake.

BM Regal Select is hands-down the best paint for the money bar nothing. I’ve only used Aura once but it was an absolute dream. It’s hard to find Ben around here but I’ve heard good things. I’d probably just pay the extra 30% or so to go up to regal select. I have some bright colors on the walls and after 5 years they still look fantastic.

You're the second person this week to tell me that's garbage paint.

I did the whole inside of my house in Sherwin Williams Emerald. The best I can describe it is like painting with almost-melted butter. It’s so good.

(the results are also good, great coverage in one coat, perfect after 2 and it’s tough so you can easily clean off whatever you managed to dirty it with)

I’ve used nothing buy Kelly Moore for years. I bought this garbage paint because I happened to be at the Despot. I won’t be doing that again.

Good paint is a wonderful thing, as it sounds you are well aware. I’ve been spoiled living a couple minutes from a sherwin williams store
